Exterminator in Lachine
Our home base, between lake and canal
Our base is at 29 19th Avenue in Lachine. Between Lake Saint-Louis, the canal and one of Quebec's major industrial parks, every part of the borough has its own pests: mice in older houses, rats around warehouses, raccoons and skunks near the shore.
Lachine stretches along Lake Saint-Louis, around the entrance to the Lachine Canal. Vieux-Lachine has a number of period buildings, and the Maison Le Ber-Le Moyne, built in the 17th century on the canal and now part of the Musée de Lachine, is the oldest complete building on the Island of Montreal. Rue Notre-Dame, the main shopping street, is home to the Marché de Lachine, Montreal's oldest public market. Further on you reach Saint-Pierre, a former town merged with Lachine in 1999, and then large areas taken up by warehouses, plants and rail lines.
When it comes to pests, each setting has its own patterns. Stone foundations and crawl spaces in older homes let mice in as soon as the weather turns cold. The waterfront parks, from Parc René-Lévesque to Parc Saint-Louis and the promenade du Père-Marquette, along with the big trees on residential streets, draw raccoons, skunks and squirrels, which then look for shelter under a porch or in an attic. Around warehouses and rail lines, rats and mice make the most of loading docks and poorly sealed buildings.
Lachine-Est, the former industrial area between the canal, rue Victoria, 6e Avenue and the Canadian Pacific tracks, is starting its transformation into an eco-neighbourhood, a project expected to take at least twenty years. The City of Montreal lists excavation work among the situations that bring rats to the surface, so if you live near a construction site, keep an eye on your basement, your yard and the base of your foundation.
Other areas we serve
What we deal with most often in Lachine
Three situations come up again and again across the borough, each tied to the building or its surroundings.

Mice in Vieux-Lachine plexes and houses
Older houses and plexes tend to have plenty of small openings: worn foundation joints, pipe penetrations that were never sealed, a damaged cellar door sweep. A mouse squeezes through a surprisingly small gap, then moves around inside the walls and above the ceilings. We track down those openings one by one before sealing them, a step at the heart of our mouse control service.
Skunks and raccoons near the lake
Along Lake Saint-Louis and the canal, where one waterfront park follows another, skunks dig their dens under a porch or shed, while raccoons go for attics and chimneys, especially in spring, when females look for a place to give birth. A suitable cage lets us catch the animal; we then close the way in with sturdy wire mesh, whether it's on the roof or at the foot of the porch. More on skunk removal and raccoon removal.
Rodents along the rail lines
Around large industrial buildings and beside the rail lines, tall grass, pallets stored outdoors and dumpsters give rats and mice quiet shelter, and from there they visit cafeterias and nearby warehouses at night. For a plant, we inspect the yard, the fence line and the base of the walls as closely as the inside, then show you which entry points need fixing; see our page on commercial pest control.
Pesticides: what Montreal's by-law allows
Lachine is a borough of the City of Montreal, so the Règlement sur la vente et l'utilisation des pesticides (by-law 21-041) applies to your property. As a rule, using pesticides outside buildings is prohibited, with some exceptions. Biopesticides and the products listed in the by-law's schedule are allowed at any time. For exterminators, commercial use of other pesticides is limited to specific cases, including rats, field mice, mice, wasp nests and carpenter ants.
For residents, the by-law bans products containing the molecules on the City's list, including several insecticides and rat poisons, and violations carry a fine. Montreal retailers are not allowed to sell those products to the public. A product bought outside Montreal is still covered by the ban as soon as it is used on a Lachine property.
An exterminator who applies pesticides outdoors must hold the City's annual commercial permit and record every application in a register. Before an outdoor treatment, ask which product will be used and which exception in the by-law it falls under: it's a fair question.

Call 514-231-1615Can I have my lawn sprayed for ants in Lachine?
Not with just any product. In Montreal, an exterminator can only use commercial pesticides outdoors in specific cases, such as carpenter ants; outside those cases, only biopesticides and the products listed in the by-law's schedule are allowed. For ordinary ants, we start by finding where they get into the house: see ant extermination.

Why do mice come back every fall in my old Lachine house?
When the nights turn cold, mice look for a warm shelter and get in through foundation cracks, pipe openings and gaps under doors. An older house has many of these openings, often hidden behind siding or in a crawl space. As long as they stay open, new mice move in, which is why we finish with sealing entry points.
A skunk has moved in under my porch near Lake Saint-Louis. What should I do?
Don't block the opening while it's underneath. Skunks are mostly active at night and their young are born around late May, so sealing at the wrong time can trap a litter. We catch it with a secure cage and remove it following Quebec's guidelines; buried wire mesh all around the porch then keeps another skunk from moving in.
What does an exterminator cost in Lachine?
Three things drive the price: the pest involved, the extent of the problem and the sealing work required. In an older house, how many openings have to be sealed counts for a lot. The quote is free; we put it together after seeing the property.
